i'm running risks when i fly off the handle
My old buddy Jim finally came across my silly little blog, prompting him to post this recollection on his. Funny thing; I've retold that story any number of times. I really had thought yo la tengo was a folk band and I was thrilled to learn that they were actually a folk and heavy feedback band.
Following a tip from this charming Jim, I've now just blown the past two hours (thanks a lot, mate) tracking down old music videos on youtube. I am astounded. The tag line is "broadcast yourself", and people most certainly do, but much more interesting is the incredible collection of old footage and video — making youtube the neutron bomb of copyright violations, so catch 'em while you can. I could, and probably will, spend days sifting through old Clash and Stevie Wonder videos (even if only for the haircuts). And don't miss the all-time hands-down best video ever filmed (directed by Spike Jonze, who later did Being John Malkovich and Adaptation).
It says something about youtube's demographic, of course, that the first hit when searching for "dalai lama" is this priceless moment. (The last few seconds are the key.)
